Portrait of the Catholic Theologian Albert Pigghe (Pighius) of Kampen (ca. 1490-1542)
Inscribed extensively wth a Latin encomium praising the sitter

9 x 8 3/4 inches (23 x 22.4 cm)

His daughter, Dr. Hedwig Kuranda, New York (1891-1967)
Her niece, Gabriele Kuranda Milne, New York (1920-2011)
By descent in in the family to the present owner
Private collection, New York
The inscription reads: Elogium M. Albertus Pigii Campensis/Qui extrema Batavium profectus ora/Non bello ore; animo sed omniumque/Praeclarus studio scientiarium/Pro Repub et optima Quiritium/Sede acer stetit hostis Lutherum, which can be translated roughly as: "In Praise of Master Albert Pigghe of Kampen/Who, coming from the far shore of the Batavians/Spoke not for war but for the spirit of all/Well known for his study of the sciences./For the state and for its best citizens/He held his position as a fierce enemy of Luther."
This work is closely related to another portrait of Albert Pigghe now in the City Archives of Utrecht, where he was dean of the church of St. John.
