Provenance/Additional Info: This VERY RARE 18th C. (tongue In cheek) watercolor "Trusted Servant" is partly humorous of the ideal servant. Note on back is handwritten in Latin & English. Explain & justify the ideal servant duties in a long poem that completes the watercolor. A RARE FIND! -- A Trusty Servant's Portrait would you see / This Emblematic Figure well survey / The Porker's Snout - not Nice in diet shows / The Padlock Shut - no Secrets He'll disclose / Patient the Ass - his Master's wrath will hear / Swiftnefs in Errand - the Stagg's Feet declare / Loaded his Left Hand - apt to Labour saith / The Vest - his Neatnefs; Open hand, his Faith girt with his Sword - his Shield upon his arms / Himself & Master He'll protect from harm. Published according to Act of Parliament 1749.
