Description
[GRANT, Ulysses S.] Paper balloon lantern with portrait of Grant. Norwalk, OH: Sprague & French, ca 1880. Â
Each panel 7 1/4 x 23 1/2 in. printed paper (some creasing, separation at join with tear to one panel). Â
An elaborately decorated paper lantern, likely from the 1880 lead up to the Republican National Convention. Grant did not seek re-election after his second term, but after Hayes's break from the Republican Party and Grant's continued global popularity, the Stalwart faction of the Party sought to seek a third term for Grant. The party, however, was split between Grant and James G. Blaine resulting in the nomination of James Garfield as a compromise candidate.
