Item Details
Description
Antique after work of Johannes Kip (1653-1722)/Leonard Knyff (1650-1722) copperplate engraving with hand coloring titled "Westwood in Worcestershire, the Seat of the Honble. Sr. John Pakington Barronet" and includes crest. Plate 65 from "Britannia Illustrata or Views of Several of the Queen's Palaces and also of the Principal Seats of the Nobility & Gentry of Great Britain." Johannes "Jan" Kip was a Dutch engraver, born in Amsterdam. He settled in London in the late 1680s where he produced his most famous work "Britannia Illustrata", first published in 1707. The single-volume contained 80 topographical engravings of London and the English countryside. The series is considered one of the most important 18th-century English topographical works as it meticulously documented buildings, gardens, and other such features lost to the march of time. Leendert Knijff, better known as Leonard Knyff, was born in Haarlem in 1650 and followed his brother Jacob (also an artist) to London at some point after 1676. In 1694, Knyff was made a British citizen. He began his career painting still lifes but became better-known in Britain for his views of gardens and country houses. The birds-eye view format, which was popularized in the UK by Knyff, is thought to have first been introduced to the British landscape tradition by his brother, Jacob. CIRCA:1720 ORIGIN: London DIMENSIONS: Height: 24" x Width: 29" x Depth: 1.5" (including frame).
