Description
A wonderful frosted glass powder box by the famous French glass maker Julien Viard, circa 1920's - 1930's, scrolling leaf and vine design with applied orange enameled roundels, octagonal shaped base with black triangular "spikes", dimensions 4 in. wide x 2 1/2 in. tall, "made in France" in raised lettering on bottom. Viard produced this particularly design in several different color schemes, this being one of the more elaborate, condition good with minor wear consitent with age and use, small enamel losses on some roundels, and some small bubbles and lines in the glass inherent in the manufacturing process. Julien-Henri Viard (1883 – 1938), an award winning French sculptor, worked in his father’s glass shop from 1900 until the father’s death in 1927. Julien continued to run the glass workshop until 1938 when it was merged with glass producer Depinoix. Julien is best known for his elegant perfume bottles with many examples surviving in collections world-wide. His dresser top powder boxes are less known but are no less exquisite in their beauty. His work is often confused with that of Rene Lalique’s glass pieces.
