T.J. Wheatley had been the chief decorator and teacher of the Cincinnati Limoges style at Coultry Pottery until starting his own firm in 1880. John Rettig and Albert Valentien then began to teach underglaze decoration using Coultry's facilities after Wheatley's departure. This vase appears to be signed by John's brother Martin, who went on to work at Rookwood along with Valentien.
