Description
No. 2884, issued for one share to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on July 5th, 1821. Signed by president RH Rose and treasurer Putnam Catlin. Not cancelled. 4 x 6.25" Inc. in 1807. The road ran from Milford, PA to Owego, NY via Wilsonville, Palmyra, Dyberry, Canaan, Rix's Gap, and Montrose. According to Wayne County history, "There were eight toll gates on the Milford-Owego Turnpike. Gatekeepers received a 10% commission. The gate near Waymart was one of the most profitable, collecting around $1,000 in 1830. Stage travel on the turnpikes reached its zenith about 1836. Canals and railroads carried freight and passengers at a fraction of the cost and led to a drop in use of the turnpikes after that. They later became part of the public highway system." Putnam was a country lawyer in Pennsylvania and Revolutionary War veteran. Putnam was extremely knowledgeable in philosophy, European art, and the classics.Date: 1821Country (if not USA): State: PennsylvaniaCity: MilfordProvenance: Ken Prag Collection
