Lillie Langtry (1853-1929), born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, was a highly successful British actress, a renowned beauty, and socialite of the late 19th century. She was the only daughter of the Dean of Jersey and was nicknamed “The Jersey Lily”. Two years after her marriage to Edward Langtry in 1874, she moved to London. Her looks and personality attracted interest, commentary, and invitations from artists and society hostesses, and she was celebrated as a young woman of great beauty and charm.
By 1881, Langtry had starred in many plays in both the Britain and the United States, eventually running her own stage production company. She was also known for her relationships with noblemen, including the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Shrewsbury, and Prince Louis of Battenberg. Her second husband was Sir Hugo Gerald de Bathe, whom she married in 1899. During her final years, as Lady de Bathe, she resided in Monaco, tending to her prize-winning gardens.
