Description

Railroad signal lamp with no bottom and no burner. It has two clear Fresnel lenses, each approx 5 inches in diameter. The lamp is 15 inches tall and 8.5 inches across. The lower edge is stamped US&S CO under one of the lenses. This is the United Switch & Signal Company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and founded by George Westinghouse in 1881. Through acquisitions and invention, the company pioneered electrical signaling and pneumatic braking systems for the railroad industry.
