A sailor's double-sided shellwork valentine Barbados, late 19th century

Octagonal form, the left side with round center with inscription, "Love The Giver," the right side with shells arranged as a flower basket, hinged wood case.

(8 1/2 in. x 8 1/2 in. (each side))

Provenance

Collection of a Virginia gentleman.

Condition

good condition considering age and fragility; most of the shells intact, and presents well visually, with some occasional loose shells that have fallen out of place; right-facing side missing two wood spacers, and has evidence of a repaired split to backboard where it meets right-most frame edge, with some later glue reinforcement evident.Â
