Item Details
Description
9th-12th century AD. A restrung group of beads and pendants comprising: biconical, barrel, tubular and rondelle type glass beads coloured 'black' 'clear' and 'gold'; three metallic cruciform pendants, two smaller with partial remains of enamelling to recesses on the upper face, one larger cross fleury, worn geometric forms within. See similar necklaces in Chartrand, R., Durham, K., Harrison, M., Heath, I. The Vikings, voyagers of discovery and plunder, Oxford, 2006, p.16, from Chessell Down, Isle of Wight. 10.2 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). Property of an East Sussex, UK, teacher; previously in a Copenhagen collection formed in the 1990s. The Viking women are described by Ibn Fadlan as wearing fine jewellery of gold and silver, which reflected the social status and the wealth of their husbands. When visiting the city of Hedeby, the Arab traveller and merchant Al-Tartushi was suitably impressed by the Viking women and their beauty, but even more by their marked degree of independence.
