Description
2nd-3rd century AD. A pair of silver navigational dividers with pivoted arms, formed from two legs with connecting joint, a long flat wedge inserted through the extended rivet; each upper arm decorated with spirals and volutes. (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, pp.331-332, nn. 638-642. 67 grams, 17.5cm (7"). From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980. This instrument, the circinus, formed of two flat-section arms, was widely used by masons and carpenters, as well as for making wall decorations, for the preparation of repetitive elements such as spirals or circles. It was widely used by the agrimensores of the army.
