written on stretcher Mignon de Henry III
unsigned, o/c, 16 by 12.5 in., gilt decorated ebonized frame.
Mignon is a term used to designate the favorites of Henry III, d. 1589, of France during the French Wars of Religion (1562-98) between Catholics and Huguenots. The mignons were fashionable and frivolous young men upon whom the king bestowed abundant gifts.
