Robert Indiana created this work for the American composer Virgil Thomson (1896-1989), on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. That same year, 1966, Virgil Thomson composed the piece "Edges: A Portrait of Robert Indiana," for solo piano.

Robert (born Robert Clark) Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1928, adopting his pseudonymous surname "Indiana" early in his career. Indiana studied at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, then Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute of Art in Utica, New York, and later studied at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. He later furthered his studies at Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Well known for his "LOVE" series displayed at the Stable Gallery in New York in 1966. Indiana's works are some of the most recognizable and influential of the Pop Art era of the 1960's. Indiana passed away in 2018 in Vinalhaven, Maine.
