Dia Azzawi est mondialement connu comme l'un des pionniers de l'art arabe moderne. Durant ses 40 ans de carrière, il explore des sujets aussi variés que la politique et l'histoire ancienne de l'Irak au travers de la peinture, la sculpture, les estampes, les dessins et l'art du livre. Il vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Londres mais continue de s'inspirer de son pays natal, l'Irak.
Dia Azzawi commence sa carrière artistique en 1964, après avoir obtenu un diplôme de l'Institut des Beaux-Arts de Bagdad et un autre diplôme en archéologie de l'Université de Bagdad en 1962. Ses études sur les civilisations anciennes et le patrimoine irakien ont eu un impact profond sur son art, construisant un pont entre le passé et le présent.

En 1969, Azzawi forme le New Vision Group (al-Ru'yya al-Jadidah) rassemblant nombre de ses contemporains autour d'une unité idéologique et culturelle, plutôt que stylistique. Le manifeste du groupe, Towards a New Vision, a souligné une association entre l'art et la révolution, et a cherché à transcender la notion de « style local » - inventé par le Bagdad Modern Art Group - en élargissant les paramètres de la culture locale pour inclure l'ensemble du monde arabe.

Son travail a été exposé dans le monde entier, notamment lors d'une rétrospective historique en 2017 au MATHAF du Qatar, et figure parmi les collections de certains des musées et institutions les plus prestigieux au monde. Il est également considéré, dans le climat tumultueux post-conflit de l'Irak des années 2000, comme l'autorité ultime en matière d'art moderniste et contemporain régional.

Dia Azzawi is internationally recognized as one of the pioneers of modern Arab art. Over the span of a 40-year career, Azzawi has explored subjects ranging from the political to the ancient history of Iraq, through painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, and book art. He lives and works in London but continues to derive inspiration from his homeland, Iraq.

Dia Azzawi started his artistic career in 1964, after graduating from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and completing a degree in archaeology from Baghdad University in 1962. His studies of ancient civilizations and Iraqi heritage had a profound impact on his art, and a key objective in the early formation of his artistic style was to link the visual culture of the past to the present.

In 1969, Azzawi formed the New Vision Group (al-Ru'yya al-Jadidah), uniting fellow artists ideologically and culturally as opposed to stylistically. The group's manifesto, Towards a New Vision, highlighted an association between art and revolution, and sought to transcend the notion of a 'local style'—coined by the Baghdad Modern Art Group—by broadening the parameters of local culture to include the entire Arab world.

With exhibitions of his work held worldwide, including a landmark retrospective in 2017 at Qatar's MATHAF, his art features in the collections of some of the world's most prestigious museums and institutions. He is also regarded, in the tumultuous post-conflict climate of 2000s Iraq, considered to be the ultimate authority on modernist and contemporary art from the region.
