Description
An attractive Indian terracotta Baroque Lady, Shunga Period, c. 1st Century BC - 1st Century AD, hand-modelled, with flattened frontal part of the body, rounded buttocks, tapered legs together with stippling at bottom, short lateral stumps for arms, and the head with pinched features. The eyes, breasts and jewelry are applied with incised added details including the elaborate hairstyle. H: 6 3/4 in (17.1 cm). Light deposits. Cf. P. Pal, Indian Terracotta Sculpture in the Early Period (Mumbai, 1991), p. 37 for type; Ex collection of Sir William Whitfield, acquired in the 1940's.
