Description
Porfirio Salinas Watercolor on paper original Biography:Porfirio Salinas was a Mexican-American painter known for his Impressionist landscapes. Some of his most admired works, including Bluebonnets, depict wildflowers in the bush of Texas. Born on November 6, 1910 in Bastrop, TX, the son of Mexican immigrant farmers, he was exposed to art for the first time after leaving school to work at a local art supply store. After meeting painter Robert William Wood in the store, Salinas worked as Wood's studio assistant. It was in the older artist's studio that he received much of his technical training in painting. In particular, Salinas was one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite artists, and his work graced the White House lobby during his tenure. It was the subject of a solo exhibition in 1962 at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. The artist died on April 18, 1973 in San Antonio, TX.
