Description
A rare and interesting Etruscan terracotta 'canopic vase' lid, c. 5th - 4th Century BC, in the form of a male human head. Referred to as a 'Canopic Vase' lid due to the similarity to Egyptian canopic jars, these cinerary urns held the ashes of the deceased and were placed inside the tomb. The lid offered is nicely modeled with handsome features and traces of original pigment beneath light deposits. H: 5 in (12.8cm). A rare and seldom offered piece with an old black wooden base. Ex Massachusetts private estate.
