Mexican War Veteran's Medal in Silver Identified to Jefferson C. Davis, c. mid-19th century, shield shaped medal with ship, crossed arms, cannon and "MEXICO" over towers and "1846," the back engraved "Lt. Jefferson C. Davis/1st US Artillery," ht. 2 1/4, wd. 2 1/8 in.
Note: Jefferson C. Davis (1828-1879) began his military career joining the 3rd Indiana Volunteers in June 1847. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the First U.S. Artillery in June 1848. In October 1848 he served at Fort McHenry near Baltimore, MD. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in February 1852. Davis was serving at Fort Sumter when it was bombarded by Confederate forces in April 1861. He served throughout the war and received significant notoriety for the killing of General William "Bull" Nelson September 29, 1862.
