Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Northern Europe, England, London, St. Paul's Churchyard, ca. 1674 & 1678 CE. A wonderful codex containing the famous satirical narrative poem "Hudibras" written by Samuel Butler (baptized 14 February 1613 and died 25 September 1680). Consisting of almost 300 pages, this mock-heroic tale consists of 3 parts; the first 2 having been printed by T.N. for John Martyn and Henry Herringman at the Bell in St. Paul's Churchyard and the Anchor in the Lower Walk of the New Exchange in 1674 and last part printed for Simon Miller at the Sign of the Star at the West End of St. Paul's in 1678. Each part has been divided into 3 cantos. The first and second parts have also been corrected and amended with several additions and annotations, while the third includes the 2 supplementary chapters entitled "An Heroical Epistle of Hudibras to his Lady" and "The Ladies Answer to the Knight." Fit with a lovely brown leather cover, each page of the book is printed with Early Modern English text in black ink. Size: 4.5" L x 1.375" W x 7" H (11.4 cm x 3.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

A few of the readers have added to the piece, inscribing names and notes upon the interior of the front cover, the last page, and the first page of the third part. "Hudibras" was intended as a criticism of religious sectarianism during the English Civil War and was highly popular at its time of publication.
