Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. Two lovely textile fragments from the same panel, each formed from woven woolen and cotton fibers in hues of black, yellow, blue, red, green, and cream. Both have a matching, dense register of abstract geometric and linear motifs. The colorful design is surrounded by a solid green tabby weave. The green is a bright, mossy hue, and contrasts beautifully with the motif. Both pieces are mounted within a wooden and glass frame. Size of larger fragment: 9" L x 8" W (22.9 cm x 20.3 cm); frame: 15.6" L x 12.5" W (39.6 cm x 31.8 cm)
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Condition
Fragments of a larger piece as shown. Fraying and unraveling of threads with perforations as shown. Small area of old repair near edge of larger piece with a blue thread. Light mineral and earthen deposits. Nice coloration and framed in a modern wood and glass frame.
