Description
Truly beautiful Jefferson Guard uniform from the 1904 Worlds Fair in Saint Louis. Worn by a man named Switzer. Includes visor cap, dress tunic, and trousers. The Jefferson Guard was composed exclusively of Spanish American War veterans and it acted as a pseudo police force at the fair.
The Jefferson Guard served as the Exposition’s security force from December 1903 until the close of the Fair. The Secretary of War authorized the use of army officers to serve as the Exposition’s police force. Reaching a maximum of 730 men at its peak, the Jefferson Guard was composed of Army officers and honorably discharged soldiers who had served in the Spanish-American War. The guard was responsible for preserving order, guarding the buildings, providing directions, and caring for lost children. In the hot months the Guard wore khaki uniforms, but in the winter they wore heavily lined blue woolen overcoats with long skirts, high collars, and matching caps.
The army greatcoat worn by this man is in the next lot.
$25.00 for materials, packing, and shipping. Insurance is $1.50 per $100. UPS signature service is $6. -- NO SHIPMENTS OUTSIDE USA --
