Acrylic painting on 3-pane reclaimed glass window, untitled, signed SAMO* (Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960-1988). 18 x 31 1/2 inches. Good condition overall. According to the consignor there are a few very small areas where some of the paint had been scuffed or lightly damaged. Those few areas (each smaller than a dime) were later retouched with acrylic paint and are essentially indistinguishable from the rest of the painting. The retouching was professionally done to match the exact color and texture of the original work.

Provenance: Formerly the property of a private California trust, thence bequeathed to the current owner. By repute, the window was originally given by the artist to a close associate of Andy Warhol's, who was a member of his movie Factory. It was later acquired by Harold Stein, New York City, from whom the owner's family acquired the work. [The current owner tried unsuccessfully to reach Harold Stein, but was unable to locate him and believes he either moved or is deceased. There is no family record documenting how the consignor's family met Mr. Stein or how much was paid for the window. Only that they acquired it from him.]

Lot Note: The present work was originally mounted on a lucite base for display. The base was damaged in shipping and is not available.
