Lot of two original "Gordo" Sunday strips by Gus Arriola, one dated August 8, 1954, the other dated December 8, 1957. In the first strip, the hard-luck Gordo catches a break (and a hungry mosquito); in the second, Gordo falls asleep in the barber's chair with amusingly predictable results. Gustavo "Gus" Arriola is one of the great overlooked cartoonists of his era, a master of brush-and-ink whose artistic sensibility compares favorably with that of Charles Schulz, Hank Ketcham, and a less mean-spirited Al Capp. Arriola received the National Cartoonists' Society's award for "Best Humor Strip" in 1957 (the year of the 2nd strip in this lot, and the first year the award was given). Charles Schulz said that Gordo was "probably the most beautifully drawn strip in the history of the business."
