In "The Beautiful Dead," Frankenstein's monster falls in love with a lady's corpse and steals it from the morgue. He stashes it in an abandoned house, drapes it in jewels, and attempts to live with it as man and wife. When the Monster leaves his love nest to procure necessities, he gets sidetracked by an angry mob with torches. He goes on the lam, and by the time he returns to his pad, advanced decay has turned his dead girlfriend into a ghastly horror. As the story ends, the Monster's tragic look of uncomprehending dismay may be Dick Briefer's crowning achievement as a cartoonist. Amidst all the pathos, the startled reader is left to contemplate: is it still necrophilia if both parties are dead?
