Description
An eighteenth century leatherbound book bearing the bookplate of journalist, author and essayist Henry Louis Mencken: The Present State of Music in France and Italy: Or, The Journal of a Tour undertaken to collect Materials for a General History of Music, by Charles Burney (London, 1771). A presentation inscription on the FFEP reads, "To H. L. Mencken / facile princeps among all driving the quill to day [sic], with the regards and esteem of F. H. Garrison / March 19, 1930". According to the magazine The American Reader, "Journalist, essayist and �Sage of Baltimore� H.L. Mencken exchanged books frequently with medical historian Colonel Fielding H. Garrison." Front cover separated from book, book in 3 pieces, wear to covers.
