This position also helped him become a scholar of Mexican archaeology and he is the founder of the Rufino Tamayo Museum of pre-Hispanic Mexican Art in Oaxaca. In 1952 he was honored with a one-man exhibition at the Paris Museum of Modern Art and he is a recipient of the prestigious French Official Legion d'Honeur ay In 1972 he was commissioned to create a mural for the United Nations in New York.
