Item Details

Description

Probable South German, perhaps Bavarian faience, circa late 18th/early 19th century. Faience is a style of glazed earthenware pottery that was a cheaper substitute of porcelain back when porcelain was not produced in Europe. The glazing was required to make the piece water tight unlike stoneware. Many factories sprouted up to produce faience with a large number of faience factories located in and near Germany. This beer stein is painted with a man and a woman outside for a stroll. Glazing shows some minor cracking present throughout. Pewter lid are intact with some minor dirt and tarnishing. Top of pewter lid is styled with a person in the center and the text "MIS XXIV DIE MA" underneath. Hand spun and formed. Hand written "J" in black marker present on bottom. Measures 9.5"T x 6.5"W.
