Description
An early 19th century Ottoman Turkish parcel gilt silver jar or bowl and cover, Tughra of Mahmud II (1808-39)Of ovoid form with a domed pull off lid surmounted by a detachable cast finial of an artichoke upon a leafy calyx, the lid with a corded rim. The body with a gilt die rolled guilloche rosette band to the upper and lower section. Gilt interior. Marked to the interior and to top of lid with tughra including figure 90 (1834-39).Height – 11 cm / 4.25 inchesWeight – 328 grams / 10.55 ozt The figure of 90 was added to the Tughra mark later in the reign of Mahmud II in 1834 therefore dating this piece to the 1830’s, see Kurkman, G. (1996), Ottoman Silver Marks, Istanbul: Mathusalem, p.58. The sah mark found on later Ottoman silver was introduced in 1844.
