Item Details
Description
Pair of Chelsea Porcelain Mazarine-Blue Ground and White Candlesticks, Intended for the 'Mecklenburg-Strelitz Service'
Circa 1763, unmarked
After a Rococo silver-form, the vari-baluster stem and flaring foot molded with rocaille-scroll cartouches reserved by a mazarine blue ground, raised on three trefoil-shell feet, the nozzles with foliate brass inserts.
Height 12 inches.

Provenance:
With Robert Williams, Eastbourne (1994).
M. Mellanay Delhom Collection, Charlotte, NC. (labels to both).

The present pair of candlesticks was originally commissioned by King George III and Queen Charlotte, to be presented to her brother, Adolphus Frederick IV, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1764. However, due to the large firing flaws, they were considered unsuitable for royal presentation and the decoration was never completed. For examples of other forms from this service, now at Buckingham Palace, see The Royal Collection Trust.

Also see Bernard Rackham, The Schreiber Collection: Catalogue of English Porcelain, for a pair of Mecklenburg-Strelitz scroll branches for candelabra, p. 26 no. 254 and for an amusing period excerpt from a Horace Walpole letter including a mention of candlesticks from this celebrated service.

C Estate of Sarah Belk Gambrell
