Item Details
Description
Andres Segovia (Argentinean/Spanish, 1929-1996). "Still Life with Violets" oil on wood, ca. 1960s. Signed at upper left in red pigment. A fascinating surrealist still life painting by Andres Segovia, the son and namesake of the famous Spanish virtuoso classical guitarist, Andres Segovia Torres, 1st Marquis of Salobrena (1893-1987). This beautiful composition includes a bouquet of violets and a large conch shell placed upon cuboid pedestals that appear to be made from stacks of books. All is delineated in a vibrant color palette, and the work is signed by the artist in red pigment at the upper left. Size: 25.625" L x 21.375" W (65.1 cm x 54.3 cm) Size of frame: 26.8" L x 22.375" W (68.1 cm x 56.8 cm)

Best known for surrealist still life paintings like this example, Andres (also Andre) Segovia began his studies in Buenos Aires, and after moving to Paris in the early 1950s, completed his studies in Europe. By the mid-1950s, his works were being exhibited in Europe, the United States, as well as Argentina. Today, Segovia's art can be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Dusseldorf; the Musee de l'Athenee, Geneva; the Nathan Cummings Foundation; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles as well as other elite institutions.

Interestingly, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, one of Hollywood's famous couples, collected Segovia's artworks, several of which were included in Bonhams "The Lauren Bacall Collection" March 31, 2015 in New York (lots 33, 35, 36, 544, 561, and 562).
