Jaques Boileau demonstrates the abuse of flagellation , the usage, horrors, abuses, and recipients of torture, with special attention given to flogging.
Boileau's controversial treatise on flagellation was vigorously denounced on moral, theological, historical, and even grammatical grounds. As a means of salvation, flagellation had a brief revival with the influence of Jansenism, and Boileau accordingly modified his disapproval of the practice, allowing that it could be beneficial.
The flagellants first appear in the eleventh century and the movement will redouble vigor during the black plague in Europe, and reached its peak during the fourteenth century.
This movement will quickly condemned by the Church as heretical and millenarian. The movement quickly became chaotic and a threat to the order of both the church and society. Pope delivers them to the Inquisition in 1349, and the King of France Philip V banned flagellants on pain of death.
