Description
A pair of Bura terracotta figural heads, Nigeria, c. 3rd - 11th Century AD, both with thick necks and simplified features, the bases with narrow mounting tangs. Each is preserved with much orange slip remaining. The function of these and other sculpture is very obscure and likely relating to funerary belief or social standing and status. H: 7 3/8 in (18.7 cm) & 7 in. (17.8 cm). Ex Maryland private collection.
