Description
A pair of Judaean coins - Pontius Pilate and Alexander Jannaeus of Judaea. The first is a bronze Prutah the Roman Procurator of Judaea Pontius Pilate, AD 26-36. (15.5 mm, 1.39g). The coin is struck under the emperor Tiberius and dated Year 18, (AD 31). Obverse depicts a lituus, the reverse bears the date LIH within a wreath. Struck a few years before the death of Jesus. The second is a bronze prutah of Alexander Jannaeus of Judaea, 103 - 76 BC and features an eight-rayed star on one side and anchor on the other. Largest (15 x 13.5mm, 1.55g). Both worn from circulation but quite historical. Ex Epshtein collection, Berkeley, CA.
