Thomas Corwin LINDSAY (1839/45-1907) Born In Cincinnati, Ohio and closely associated with the city and the state, Thomas Corwin Lindsay (1839-1907) was an important 19th-century Ohio River Valley landscape painter. Recognized for his talent at an early age, Lindsay was discovered to a certain extent by a Cincinnati Inquirer reporter in February of 1858 who, after encountering the young man and his work, described him as possessing "the true spirit of an artist", a trait "rarely exhibited by any so young". Lindsay traveled frequently, often venturing west in pursuit of natural subject matter, and is known to have created several large compositions, one, according to the Cincinnati Inquirer in December of 1869, titled "An Evening in the Yosemite". Despite a brief period of study in Dusseldorf, Germany in the late 1860s, he was largely self taught but managed to achieve some degree of success as a landscape and portrait painter.
