Item Details
Description
PERE CARBONELL I HUGUET (Sarriá, 1850-Barcelona, 1927)."Angelus".Patinated bronze on wooden base.Vda. De Cabot and sons, Barcelona.Size: 92 x 25 x 21 cm (sculpture); 97 x 28 x 28 x 28 cm (base).Pere Carbonell was an artist who specialised in monumental sculpture, a great admirer of Greek statuary and classicism. The present work represents a beautiful young woman with stylised features, concentrating on prayer, slender and innocent, enveloped in a veil of mystery. Carbonell was awarded the third medal at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid for a version of the work "Angelus" in white marble. His language, framed within realism, expresses an ideology that seeks to connect aesthetics and ethics, based on an identification between Beauty and Morality.A disciple of La Lonja in Barcelona, in 1905 Pere Carbonell was a full member of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Saint George in Barcelona, a member of the Artistic Circle of Saint Lucca and a lecturer in anatomy at the La Lonja School of Fine Arts. Carbonell made a name for himself at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona (1888) with monumental works such as the Saint Thomas for the façade of the Seminary, which was destroyed during the events of the Tragic Week of 1909. Among his numerous works are the statue representing Catalonia on the Columbus Monument in the Port of Barcelona, the statue of Juan Luis Vives y March on the façade of the National Library in Madrid and the sculptural decoration of the Columbus Mausoleum in the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. He also made the models for two Famas for the entrance to the aforementioned Universal Exhibition, at the Arc de Triomf.
