985 Bermuda Silver Dollar Commemorative Crown Royal Mint. The Bermuda Monetary Authority has authorized the Royal Mint to manufacture a limited number of silver dollar coins produced in a high quality proof finish and a brilliant uncirculated version, as a tribute to Bermuda's cruise ships for their contribution to the island's tourism industry. The reverse design was prepared by Mr. J.W.R. Savage. It shows centrally , a Bermuda battery . which a magnificent cruise vessel above and to the right are depicted palm trees. The design concept featuring the buttery at the water's edge was, by tradition, a frequent adjunct to Bermuda dwelling as every house had its buttery for keeping food cool and fresh before the days of ice. The buttery is a small two-story building which thick walls and small shuttered openings on all four sides. , which encouraged the circulation of breeze while preventing direct penetration of the sun's rays. Its roof is built in the shape of a steep pyramid, creating a high ceiling on the inside which allows the heat to rise , cooling the food stored on shelves below. Today, the buttery no longer used for this purpose and is now merely an architectural decoration . Ships which frequented Bermuda during the 1985 cruise season . The obverse design portrays the new effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Raphael Maklouf. The effigy was approved for use from 1 January, 1985.
