"Flights of Icarus" is a collection of the work of 32 artists. some fave raves of the era, others unknown to me, anyway. The 130-odd mostly full-page illustrations are collected into eight sections or "Moments" (FALL & FLIGHT, LEVIATHANS, LEGEND, XANADU, NOWHERE, TIME, SPACE, and ORACLES,) each Moment being prefaced with two pages of rock style philosophy by Donald Lehmkuhl - lists of weighty aphorisms like "Existence glides from fire to water, from water to fire" or "Nature specializes in failures. Only god is right the first time.

Roger Dean contributes five pieces to the collection, all collected elsewhere: DRAGON, PATHWAYS, FLIGHTS OF ICARUS (the cover) GREENSLADE SEA, and RELAYER. Chris Foss, Jeffrey Jones, Michael Kaluta, Alan Lee, Syd Mead, Bruce Pennington, Barry Windsor-Smith (one fantasy illo,) and Berni Wrightson (two dinosaur pictures) all contribute a few pieces. Other artists include Patrick Woodroffe and Una Woodruff, Ian Miller, and Jim Fitzpatrick.
