Description
Two (2) wooden boxes, including 19th century sewing kit. 1st item: One (1) sewing box, likely elm, with burl veneers and inlaid metal heart shield on hinged lid with a metal finial handle above escutcheon on the body. Interior of lid with framed mirror and metal locking mechanism. Composed of twelve compartments of varying size; three with leather-lined inserts, four with wooden lids with finial handles; one with leather-lined cardboard lid with ribbon handle and decorative medallion of flowers made of metal, glass, and mother of pearl; and one with leather lined wood and sewn loops for holding needles or scissors. Contains one (1) glass inkwell with stopper, two (2) metal thread spools, four (4) bone thread spools, two (2) pincushions, three (3) pairs of sewing scissors, two (2) wooden needle cases, three (3) bone needle cases, one (1) bone scraper, one (1) brown thread with metal grommets, one (1) bone thimble, three (3) metal thimbles, two (2) bone needles, thirteen (13) assorted needles, two (2) packs of one dozen German silver needles and one (1) metal key. 3 1/2" H x 11 1/8" W x 8" D. 2nd item: One (1) mahogany veneered box with inlaid six point star, metal escutcheon on front of base, bun feet and blue paper-lined interior with light green and brown accent paper border and six pointed star on interior of lid. 6 1/2" H x 12 3/8" W x 9 1/4" D. Both probably European, 19th century.Provenance: The Estate of Patricia Kiegel, Nashville, Tennessee.
Condition
1st item: Overall good condition with age wear to edges and split in wood across width of the lid; minor damage to left hinge; one compartment with leather lined insert detached from base. 2nd item: Age wear to wood and minor damage to corners; interior lining lifting and missing in some places, largest measuring, 3 1/2" H 2 1/8" W; split in wood to bottom across width.
