In the early 1990s, Philip-Lorca diCorcia began taking portraits of hustlers and male prostitutes in Los Angeles. The information contained in the title of this work provides the subject's name, age, his home city, and what he typically charges for a sex act—which is also the amount diCorcia paid him (out of a National Endowment for the Arts grant) to take his picture.
Mike stands on a Hollywood street at dusk, palm trees with the unmistakeable Capitol Records building behind him. DiCorcia uses this public space to create this highly staged photograph that juggles a number of ideas - truth, value, necessity and commodification.
