Description
This iconic map was created and published by Rick Shubb and Earl Crabb (Humbead) in 1969. Three different editions of Humbead's Revised Map of the World were published in 1968, 1969, and 1970. A well-known and celebrated piece of 1960s West Coast history, these maps are rare on the market today. The only known example in an institutional collection is part of the David Rumsey Map Collection at Stanford University.
"Certainly the most astonishing document to come from the underground presses is Humbead's Revised Map of the World With List of Population. It provides the independent verification of the fallacy of space, and that pernicious reasoning that makes New York and Berkeley seem far apart on normal maps. Everyone knows that what's important is people, not distances, and now for the first time we have a map recognizing this." - The Berkeley Barb
This map is celebrated for its place in the history of the West Coast folk scene and the hippie counterculture. Surrounding the map is a population list of the most influential names of the time: Robert Crumb, Johnny Cash, Stan Lee, Gilbert Shelton, Soupy Sales, M.C. Escher, Phil Ochs, Ornette Coleman, Rick Griffin, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Richard Nixon, Eldridge Cleaver, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, + over 1,100 other 60s luminaries
