Alexis Paul Arapoff (Russian/American, 1904-1948)
Dunster House from Lars Anderson Bridge
Signed "Arapoff" l.l., identified on a detached loan label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, (see below) encapsulated on the frame backing paper.
Gouache and watercolor on paper/board, sight size 18 3/4 x 28 7/8 in. (47.5 x 73.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Small finger smudge or accretion to sky in u.c., not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Sold for the benefit of the Higginson 1908 Foundation, donated by the Harvard Club of Boston. Originally a gift from William Germain Dooley (1904-1975), art critic, writer, and educator of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Exhibitions: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Alexis Paul Arapoff Memorial Exhibition, March 12-April 13, 1952.
N.B. In a biography of the artist provide by his son John Arapoff, it is noted that the artist painted scenes of Boston, its suburbs, and Harvard University buildings in 1935. The graceful Weeks Footbridge, frequently travelled by Harvard Business School students and faculty, forms the focal point of this Harvard view.
