Description

SCARLETT JAMES YORKE: (1799-1871) British General, a hero of the Crimean War for his actions during the Battle of Balaclava, 1854. A.L.S., J. Yorke Scarlett, three pages, 8vo, Hampshire, 23rd March 1870, to Palile (?). Scarlett states that he will do what he can for a Miss Taylor in regard to the School for Officer's Daughters, although remarking 'but so many applications prove...I can not promise all my votes' and further explaining that he feels obliged 'to turn a deaf ear to the applications of many excellent officers in the rank of Quarter Master' He further states 'I hope your wish for employment may not long remain unfulfilled. I fear by the orders sent today several new (? word indecipherable) are to be created & I conclude there must be an increase of staff but there are few vacancies for Cavalry men as such.'
