[CARDIGAN EARL OF]: (1797-1868) British Lieutenant General, commanded the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. Cardigan led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. MONTGOMERIE ARCHIBALD (1812-1861) 13th Earl of Eglinton. British Politician, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1852, 1858-59. A.L.S., Eglinton & Winston, three pages, 8vo, Eglinton Castle, 15th December 1848, to the editor of John Bull, marked Private. The Earl informs his correspondent that he has received many letters 'on the subject of the attacks on Lord Cardigan in the John Bull that I cannot refrain from writing to you about it' and continues 'I will not go into the merits of the case, for I really do not know them, but I must urge upon you the fact that such an attack on a prominent member of the Conservative Party must be injurious to that Party.' He further adds 'The matter having been settled to the satisfaction of the Horse Guards, as well as of the parties themselves, I cannot but regret that it should have been brought so prominently forward in the John Bull & I know that this feeling is very general among the Conservatives'.
