AMERICAN FEDERAL TABLE TOP CELLARETTE.
AMERICAN FEDERAL TABLE TOP CELLARETTE.
Item Details
Description
Attributed to or found in Oxford, North Carolina, early 19th century, walnut and yellow pine. Dovetailed case with lift lid, shaped feet and dovetailed drawer. Divided interior and inlaid escutcheon. Square nails. Refinished with additions, repaired hinge rail, age splits and shrinkage, repaired drawer (missing knob). 20"h. 17.25"w. 14.5"d. Ex Swan Tavern and Lisburne Lane Antiques (Virginia).
Condition
Wood matches for case, apron, drawer front and legs. Back board and board at the bottom covering the drawer (square nails) match. Legs are attached in three different ways - front right is mortised into the front panel, front left has a rectangular post that goes through the bottom board and the back legs have square posts with chamfered corners that go through the bottom board. Hinge rail on case repaired with square nails and iron spikes. Scalloped side aprons look good on the inside, reattached with glue and late nails leaving splits and separation from legs and case. Back right corner of apron and leg have corresponding edges along the split (both would match up exactly if reattached). Left bottom side has added screw repair, left apron has two nail holes that don’t match up with anything. Two large nails on the front legs match up with aprons (right leg has added nails). Refinished, edge loss to back top corner, legs, lid molding and apron edges, drawer has replaced pull and back board (old replacement with matching wood - maybe cut down original board that lost dovetails). Underside of bottom case board has chamfered edges. Key escutcheon replaced. The legs are a concern since they are attached in different ways. The apron definitely came with the legs. However, inside the legs look like they've been there a long time and the wood matches the rest of the case.
