Description
Salvator Rosa, follower of (Naples, 1614 - Rome, 1673) ext. 27,3x27,3 in., int. 20,8x21 in. This pair of paintings on slate depicts two crucial miracles: the healing of the blind man by Jesus and the healing of the cripple by his apostle Peter. This pendant represents the passing of the baton between Christ and his disciple Peter, aimed at reconfirming the legacy of Jesus’ teachings and the holiness of his apostolate through the Church of Rome. Both scenes consist of seven characters, framed by simple, essential architecture and a green landscape in the background. Behind Jesus there is a slight arch in an imposing stone wall; on the other hand, the door behind the apostle Peter is wide, almost a neglected ruin. This pair of paintings on the slate is enclosed in two delightful, gilded frames and has been attributed to the circle of Salvator Rosa. This pictorial evidence may be the result of an observation of the master’s production during his first stay in Rome - between 1638 and 1640 - when he experimented with his first sacred subjects, the dark tones and violent lights diluting in front of the classicist lesson learned from Pietro Testa and the French Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain.
