Description
after PAOLO VERONESE (Italian 1528-1588) attributed to GIOVANNI "GIAN" DOMENICO FERRETTI (Italian 1692-1766) A PAINTING, "Abduction of Europa," 1720-1740, oil on canvas, signed indistinctly, "Pietro R..." 18" x 24" Note: An exquisite example of transitional Mannerism to Baroque cabinet collector painting; the impending fate of the timeless innocent beauty Europa is likened to the very last ray of sun that sets at her back. The viewer beholds the moment she is subdued into abduction by Zeus. The mannerist color palette combined with weighty Baroque bodies engaged in a dramatic movement that appear to occur with such notable gravity as they apex within the central figure is a treat for any viewer. Her only act of resistance is an allusion as she balances on the shoulder of her attendant to mount the bull. Note the unnerving glassy calm sea in the background, and that a lit torch foretells her journey to the Isle Crete, where she will bear a son, King Menos. Typical of Gian Domenico Ferretti's style, the attendant at the back of Europa has a distinctive cheekbone and eyes, and the face of Europa bears the unmistakable beauty and influence of Raphael's signature downcast serene beauty. The mischievous putti cause a ruckus and we hardly notice the presence of an armed cupid in the treetops.  Provenance: Private Estate, Carrollton, Texas
