Pair of 23" All original character dolls - Grandmother and Grandfather by Norah Wellings. Provenance: these dolls were purchased from the living collection auction of celebrity JANE WITHERS (Hollywood Film Actress 1930's-40's) in 2004. She had found them at a Boston toy store in 1937. Afterward, she had entered them in the 1941 International Doll Show in Philadelphia where she won second prize! Jane autographed the item in the sales catalog for the buyer. Both dolls have felt pressed faces with painted features, mohair wigs/beard. The female is dressed in an all felt multi-layered costume and boots. Cotton check apron, bonnet. She is carrying her basket. He is dressed in all felt clothing, hat, leggings, shoes; rayon neck scarf. He has his walking stick. She is marked on right wrist. Both have the paper banner entering them into the 1941 Doll Show and the female has the Second Prize ribbon. Dolls also come with a Certificate of Authenticity of Jane Withers previous ownership.
