Description

Title: Painted Canvas & Wood Bee Skep

Provenance/Additional Info: An early 20th century model of a Bee Skep, probably from a Fraternal Lodge – Odd Fellows or possibly Masonic. The skep is painted canvas stretched over a solid dome; the base is gold-painted wood. The detailing and color on the skep are wonderful, right down to the painted entrance! The base measures approximately 10 ½” square and the overall height is about 8”. The skep itself is 6” high. Very fine condition with only one small, shallow dent with a tiny hole (just above and to the right of the entrance) and some minor peeling paint (back side). No other paint or condition issues. I purchased this skep at an auction that included numerous other fraternal items. The International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) uses Bee Skeps (to symbolize industriousness) in their symbolism frequently, leading me to presume it is from an IOOF Lodge. A nice piece, especially for the bee keeper.
