Biography: Arnold Bocklin, son of a textile merchant from Basel, studied from 1845-1847 at the Dusseldorf Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. With Rudolf Koller, he undertook a study trip over Cologne and Aachen to Brussels and Antwerp. From 1850-1857 he settled down in Rome, was part of the local German artists' colony, and came into contact with Anselm Feuerbach and Oswald Achenbach. This first Italian phase, marked by the exploration of the Old Masters, was the foundation for his later mythological motifs. In 1853 Bocklin married the Italian Angela Pascucci, his muse and biggest supporter, with whom he had 14 children. During his stay in Rome, his works aroused the attention of the Bavarian King Ludwig I and patron of the arts and collector, Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack. Other stations of the following years were Pompeii, Naples, Weimar, Basel and Munich. In the so-called Florentine period during which he was part of the circle Hans von Maree, Vladimir Swertschkow and Adolf von Hildebrand, he executed the five versions of the Isle of the Dead. A brief period from 1885-1892 near Zurich followed Bocklin's last years in Florence and Fiesole. He had a stroke and died in 1901 in his adopted home of Italy.
